September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to encourage honest conversations about mental health, recognize possible warning signs, and remind people that help is available.
People experiencing emotional distress do not always know how to explain what they are feeling or how to ask for support. Fear, stigma, isolation, housing instability, financial hardship, disability, trauma, and other challenges can make reaching out even more difficult.
We can all help create communities where people feel seen and supported. Sometimes that begins with a simple question: “How are you really doing?” Listening without judgment, taking concerns seriously, and helping someone connect with professional support can make a meaningful difference.
According to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, warning signs may be especially concerning when they are new, increasing, or connected to a painful event, loss, or significant change. If someone shares that they are considering suicide, their words should never be dismissed or treated as a secret. Compassionate, direct support can help connect them with the assistance they need.
At Triple C Housing, we understand that wellness is connected to more than one part of a person’s life. Safe housing, reliable services, supportive relationships, community connection, and the ability to make meaningful choices can all contribute to greater stability.
If you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress or thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Support is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In an immediate emergency, call 911.
This month and throughout the year, let us continue building communities where people know they are not alone, their lives have value, and asking for help is a sign of strength.
