Black History Month is a time to reflect on the struggles and triumphs of Black individuals who have fought for justice, equity, and opportunity. At Triple C Housing, we recognize that housing is more than just shelter—it is a foundation for stability, dignity, and opportunity. The history of housing in America is deeply intertwined with the fight for civil rights, and Black leaders have played a pivotal role in advancing fair housing policies that continue to impact communities today.

Black Leaders Who Shaped Housing Justice
The fight for fair housing and equitable access to homeownership has been long and hard-fought, with Black leaders at the forefront of change. Their advocacy laid the groundwork for affordable housing initiatives, anti-discrimination laws, and community-driven development projects—values that Triple C Housing upholds in our mission today.

  • Shirley Chisholm (1924–2005): As the first Black woman elected to Congress, Shirley Chisholm was a fierce advocate for fair housing and economic justice. She helped push for policies that addressed housing discrimination and economic disparities in underserved communities.
  • Whitney Young Jr. (1921–1971): A key figure in the Civil Rights Movement, Whitney Young Jr. played an instrumental role in shaping federal policies that supported affordable housing programs, urban development, and job opportunities for marginalized communities.
  • Dorothy Mae Richardson (1922–1991): A grassroots activist, Dorothy Mae Richardson’s work in Pittsburgh led to the development of community-based financial institutions that made homeownership accessible to low-income families—paving the way for what we now know as Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs).
  • John Hope Franklin (1915–2009): A renowned historian, Franklin documented the impact of housing discrimination on Black communities, helping to shape conversations around policy reform and economic justice.

Continuing the Legacy: Marcus Kellam and the Future of Housing Equity
At Triple C Housing, we are committed to building on this legacy. Today, Black professionals and advocates continue to break barriers and drive change in housing development and community engagement.

One such leader is Marcus Kellam, our Director of Community Engagement & Development, whose work ensures that Triple C Housing’s mission extends to more families, individuals, and veterans in need of stable, affordable housing. His role in expanding our property portfolio and fostering community partnerships directly contributes to creating a more inclusive and equitable housing landscape in New Jersey.

This year, Marcus was named one of NJBIZ’s Forty Under 40 honorees and 15 Rising Stars—a testament to his dedication, leadership, and impact. This recognition celebrates young professionals shaping New Jersey’s future, and Marcus exemplifies how Black leaders continue to drive meaningful change in the housing sector.

As we honor the Black pioneers of housing equity, we also uplift the Black leaders of today who are shaping the future of affordable housing and community-driven development.
